In the tranquil setting of Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, a Leicester Longwool mother ewe and her young lamb are nestled together in the soft, green grass of spring. The lamb appears peaceful and content, resting against its mother, embodying a serene moment in nature.
The Leicester Longwool sheep is a part of the Rare Breeds program which promotes genetic diversity in livestock from 18th-century colonial British America. They were used as a pioneer breed, helping to establish agriculture in the early days of the colonies. The Leicester Longwool sheep played a significant role in American history, being similar to the sheep raised by George Washington at his estate in Mount Vernon.
